Grab Last Minute Things From East of England Co-Op

If you’re still filling your trolleys with food for the festive period but are missing a few bits, then pop on over to the East of England Co-Op and grab some of their Sourced Locally festive goodies. Unfortunately our large Co-Op is shutting at the end of December (making way for an Asda sadly) so they didn’t have much stock on the shelves so we had to travel to a couple of different ones in our area to finish our shopping.

If you’re a fan of the Mallow Whirls, well they’ve jazzed that there firm favourite for Christmas with a little white chocolate and the cutest little holly making them look uber festive. If you don’t fancy that, then grab the hand crafted Mince Pies from Leggs Bakery, all crumbly shortcrust pastry hugging the sweet and juicy mincemeat below! Pour yourself out a glass of Golden Ale and pile your plate with Fairfield Crisps for an evening in front of the TV.

sourced locally

Sourced Locally is by far my most favourite of ranges that incorporates all of our amazing local producers in East Anglia, and shows what makes this county great.

For a quick snack, we popped the pasties and sausage rolls in the microwave from Hollybush Farm and for dinner used the leftover pesto from the sensational Butternut Squash and Feta dish we tend to eat once a week, smothering spaghetti in it’s fresh green creaminess piling the bowl high with the tomato and herb focaccia – again locally sourced.

If our largest Co-Op had still had their shelves stocked high then I’m sure we could have showed you many more delights to whet your appetite but sadly the small ones don’t carry very much.

Co-Op EoE

I had been looking forward to trying “Tinsel Toes” seasonal brew from Woodforde’s, the Sage and Onion Scotch Egg from Wolff Evans and Sons, and Cranberry Sauce from Stokes Sauces. All total favourites in their regular everyday forms and which look so mouthwateringly good in their festive forms, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be this time around.

Happy Christmas Everyone!

Christmas For Pets

We mustn’t forget our little furry friends this festive season, so we’re going to take a look at what’s available for them in a bit. First, it was my little fur boy’s 1st birthday on Thursday so we decided that we’d organise a little party for him and the furries so they could have a bit of a treat.

I ordered a cake from Pets Pyjamas a few weeks ago and it arrived Wednesday morning via Doggylicious and unfortunately didn’t look as neat as the picture that promotes it. The yogurt icing was quite messy and it actually looked like they’d kicked it about a bit before putting it in the box. It was incredibly dry too which was a shame. I actually wish I’d purchased the cupcakes or birthday cake from Barkers of Suffolk because they look more moist and scrummy. But nevertheless, once we put it all out on the table, Pea couldn’t wait to try everything.

Party

Armitage Pets so kindly sent Pea some Christmas presents, but we thought that we’d use some of them for his special day, so we poured out for him:

Pack of Good Boy Succulent Festive Bangers

Pack of Duck Bites (from the Doggy Deli Pack)

Pack of Chewy Chicken Strips (from the Doggy Deli Pack)

Pack of Good Boy Festive Cranberry Choc Drops

The Festive packs are taken from the Christmas Festive Range by Good Boy which include regular choc drops, Christmas Pud & Christmas Reindeer squeaky toys, Flashing Christmas Nose Balls, Mince Pies, Christmas Dog Stocking and Chocolate Orange Mini’s which were consumed the night we received the parcel as Pea and Ali wouldn’t leave the box alone so we had to open up a packet to quell their curiosity. They’re not that expensive either, so if you want to get your furry friend a little something for under £10 they’re pretty good value for money keeping them happy while you tuck into your Turkey.

Good Boy

Needless to say Pea’s party went down a storm, all bangers were consumed and albeit looking a bit dry, the cake went down a storm with Pea trying to steal his furry friends pieces for himself. Typical Pea really.

Back In Your Box You...

Over the last few days I’ve reached out to a few old colleagues, mainly just to say hello and ask how they are. It’s been met with a deathly silence apart from one person. The only person to have come back to me is an old hospital radio colleague who still presents hospital radio and has no grandiose ideas of becoming famous. Just a lovely down to earth bloke. Shame the others weren’t the same.

On guy I messaged write a nice little bit about himself, and once I showed him who I was ignored me. The others have been active on their feeds but have just totally blanked me. What I find insulting about that is the fact that these people have gone on to be “well known” yet never seem to discuss their past (probably ashamed of it) and so me, saying hello has been a bit of their past popping up that obviously has no influence on them now to help their careers. I was there at the start but now I serve no purpose I’m ignored. And people asked me why I wouldn’t attend a reunion….

big deal

Probably is when they have a taste of stardom, they change, they become notoriously big headed, self centred and more interested in friends that can influence their career than those that grafted with them at the beginning teaching them their trade. I had more respect for my teachers at school than they have of me.

Sometimes I feel like an intruder when I try to reach out. Shunned to a life forever back in my box. Don’t get me wrong, a few people in the past that I’ve spoken to have been more than happy to take time out of their lives to chat to me, find out how I am and if there’s anything they can do for me because they thought highly of me. More surprising when these people were the ones that I never called friends. The ones I called friends are now it seems to far up their own arses, pretentious little wannabes that I’m far too common to even pass the time of day with.

good as me

Thing is, I still have a bit of influence, and if I so wanted could knock a few bricks out of their fairytale castles but I wouldn’t because I’m not like that, but I can bet you now. You used me and my talent on the way up. I’ll be waiting when you’re on the way down with the carpet corners in my hand to pull it from under your feet. Time will tell.

Where Have All The Personalities Gone - Radio

I was having a discussion with Andy this morning as I turned my computer on and loaded up Radio Jackie for another day of listening and writing. Paul Coia standing in for someone or other was chatting away in his Scottish accent and something struck me (no, no flying dog toys or anything like that thankfully) just a thought that these days radio has no personality any more. Long gone are the days when you’d load up a CD, or get a record cued up with your backtiming sorted to the news, and your notes of what you fancied chatting about and in has crept huge conglomerates buying up each and every station to add them into the big world of automation, same playlists, same chat, same ads. What the hell has happened to all the personalities now?

Graham Gold
Graham Gold © http://sparkleagency.com/

DJ’s rock up to do their slots, sit down in front of their 2 screens with everything already loaded, they type in what the producer tells them that they’re going to talk about and when and that’s it. The same playlists loaded over the radio groups multiple stations to play the same thing at the same time, just different person doing the segways. No more Kenny Everetts, Chris Tarrants and the like, personalities shining out from your radio with their own opinions, favourite music and quirks that lead you to tune in day after day.

I think I know what’s happened though. Back when I started (after volunteering at mainstream originally as general dogsbody) we did the hard graft. Hospital Radio although got frowned upon was usually where DJs of that day had learnt their trade. Ward Radio where I volunteered was responsible for more than one well known DJ including Graham Gold, Steve Hyland, Sutish Sharma, Andy Milburn, Darren Spence, Steve Reed… oh the list goes on. But back then hospital radio laid the groundwork for mainstream and personalities were nurtured. Our station never had much money but we made sure our presenters were fully trained, had access to the most up to date equipment (as then) and were ready to send their aircheck tapes off to “proper radio” if they so wanted. Then along came reality TV and these nobodies with no talent started to replace our personalities. Kate Lawler rocks up as a DJ on Capital Radio and sits there whilst other people around her do the work. Mark Wright does the same. Now we hear Georgia Moffatt is lined up to do some radio show up north. All the hard work done by hospital radio to train the DJ’s of today tossed aside like an old chip wrapper for some bit of totty seen on TV that’s got some Radio Executive’s loins a twitching. What the actual eff! These talentless scripted reality himbos and bimbos get thrust into the limelight because they’re perceived to be “totty”. As far as I knew totty sold magazines not music (unless it was just in music videos) so radio executives have their priorities wrong. It’s them that have changed my once loved career into a laughing stock. No talent needed now, just “tits and teeth”. Sad and shameful.

Christmas Party Playlist 2015

I don’t know if I’m the only one that’s noticed but this year we seem to have quite a few funky tracks gracing the airwaves unlike the usual drivel of slow, moody stuff, or music from TV talent shows (famous last words, you watch). So to celebrate this I’ve put together a little playlist of my own (feel free to ignore it though, I’m no Simon Cowell after all). Give me your verdict if you too think December is is bouncing with top tracks?

This one is my absolute favourite at the moment, originally released in October this year, but didn’t seem to be on anyone’s radar until now.  Le Grind – Pillow Talk (check out the video – who needs big budgets these days when you’ve got a cracking tune).

Take That – Hey Boy. Gets me waving my arms in the air.

Take That – I Like It. Now this one I’ve sent over to Mastermix asking them to mix it with 2 other tracks which mix perfectly! They need to mix it with Rachel Stevens – Some Girls and Goldfrapp – Strict Machine (you could even add a little 2 Hearts from Kish Mauve’s original, or Kylie’s one at a push if you speed it up a bit).

Wouldn’t be Christmas without a little bit of Kylie so this one with little sis Dannii seems to do well. Well it’s played pretty much on every station I tune into.

I’m no fan of Asda but the marketing team found a corker with Fleur East I guess. I was shaking my bits in a fury after hearing this for the first time so I guess it’s got to be on the playlist.

It’s only taken them 12 years, obviously no hurry for decent music in that time. Darkness – I Am Santa. Not as good as Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bells) but nice to see the return of jingling bells at least.

Last one, I’m throwing a bit of a curve ball out there. I love it, but the video is a bit creepy and to be desired. Ah well, you make your own mind up.

Over to you lot now. What tunes will you be loading up this Christmas. This lot will probably be on Andy’s DJ list no doubt (well I’ll damn well sneaky in there if I have to myself just to get my “groove on” at any parties he has to do).

Addressing the Balance - Neil Fox Trial

I don’t normally court controversy and tend to keep away from anything which the mainstream press report due to their utter immoralistic reporting and disinformation pumped across various channels but this last week after reading a few reports about someone who I have worked with in the past has been quite disturbing.

Neil Fox has been accused of sexually assaulting “victims” including one at his former workplace Capital Radio.  Now, reading this story they claim that when Neil was a DJ at Capital Radio he kissed a girl and forced his tongue in her mouth, as well as other reports of having sex with girls in the station’s record library (amongst other allegations).  One of the stories claims that it was one of the girls that used to hang around the radio station around 1988-1991.  Now, thing is this. I was one of these girls that hung around the studios at this time.  I’m utterly ashamed of it these days and would strongly urge that if you feel the need to hang around places – DON’T do it if you are under 18 years old.  Now my reason for saying this isn’t the fact that the person you are hanging around to see is predatory. In fact in all the years I religiously went up to Warren Street to sit outside and wait for DJ’s to emerge I never ONCE saw any of the DJ’s become predatory.  However, a LOT of the girls that did hang around at that time were very, very forthcoming and didn’t think twice of grabbing DJ’s in some very inappropriate areas.  There were never just 1 or 2 girls, there were upwards of 10-20 girls at any one time bombarding DJ’s when they exited the building.

There is also a claim that one of the girls (probably the main one in this case or the one who made the initial claim) that she was left alone with Neil Fox in the underground car park after asking her to take some things to his car.  NO.  This would not be correct, simply because the girls were like a herd of sheep.  If one girl went to his car then all her friends would have followed too.  Not once were any of the girls singled out in the time I was part of the crowd as inevitably they ALWAYS moved around like sheep together.

Neil Fox
Neil Fox: Image from http://www.geocities.ws/radiointheuk/hit40uk_gallery.html

As for her knowing where he lived and went to his flat.  Yes, lots of girls knew where the DJ’s lived because quite a few of them had either followed them in cars to where they lived, or found out illegally with the help of insiders.  It was common knowledge of where they lived and more often than not these girls would visit en masse to visit the DJs.  Thankfully I was not like that and refused to follow them to where they lived. I think the furthest I got was on the train a DJ had boarded but got off halfway. More often than not because where we got off, there was a chippy outside that did bloody awesome chips (I had my priorities straight, obviously). But it was disgusting behaviour.

A lot of these girls were indeed under the age of 18 and would literally lust after these guys who were either in their 20s or early 30s. Neil Fox was one whom girls got utterly obsessed by because he was really friendly and really quite bubbly.

In 1991 however I got the opportunity to work at Capital Radio in a voluntary capacity. I was kind of an assistant that would do pretty much anything to learn the job.  When these girls found out that I was working there I would often get death threats, and followed on the tube home with girls stalking me with daggers in their eyes.  I stayed there for about 18 months and moved on but in all that time when I did work with Neil Fox, I can honestly say, hand on heart that all we ever had was what is now named (thanks I’m a Celeb) as “flanter” just purely flirty banter. Yes he would touch you but never inappropriately. It was more in a friendly flirty way. The guy even asked me out on a date while one of my friends was with me when I bumped into him on my way home at Warren Street but again, there was no touching and certainly no groping. At the time it was just a young guy flirting with a young girl, end of.  All this propaganda of what he’s supposed to have done, if true (very unlikely) would have been encouraged by the girls themselves.  They were certainly not innocent of provoking these young guys (as they were then) and the thought of them coming out now to claim they were abused sickens me to my core.

Also as for him signing “Kissy Kissy” when asked for an autograph. Oh come on! All DJs sign something flirty if they’re a flirty kind of person. I once had a conversation with another DJ about something and his words were “Promises Promises” but I’m not going to run to a solicitor complaining that he was being forward. It’s utterly pathetic.  Neil Fox once signed a skirt for me for a charity raffle. He signed on my knee. Wow. If I had fancied him I imagine I too would have asked him to sign my bum but I wouldn’t be reporting him 20 years later for doing it. You did it at the time and no doubt all your friends around you would have cheered him on and laughed with you about it. But you can’t go complaining about that 20 years down the line. If it upset you that much at the time why didn’t you complain about it then? I know, it’s because at that time you were bigging it up with all your “posse” no doubt.

The media are as usual making Neil Fox out to be the predator. Those of us that were around the place at that time have seen quite a different thing and no doubt, the guy will be dragged through the court and lose his career through claims from someone who would have encouraged him to get closer to her. She still has her career (if it’s who I think it is).

I know no girl/woman deserves being attacked, but what was back in the 80s/90s and was just flirty (and encouraged by the girl 100%) now seems to be tainted with accusations of assault.  The guy was no Sa Vile that’s for sure. But in my time I’ve heard all sorts. One girl told me that Neil Fox had made her pregnant – which he hadn’t, she was just a totally over the top, completely obsessed fanatic, living in a fantasy world. The girl was my best friend (and wasn’t pregnant, nor saw him on any kind of intimate moment because her mum wouldn’t let her out on her own). How’s them apples.  Same is happening again here, but 20 years later, accusations with really no substance .  Shame.  I’ve seen it from both sides and it’s not all black and white.  Don’t believe everything you read.

Lose Weight for Christmas with Exante Diet

I’m no fan of meal replacement, you all know that, but they’re always the exception when some of the meal replacements taste awesome which is what I’ve found with Exante. Kelly originally reviewed Exante and found it a little lacklustre, however since then it seems that they’ve changed some of their things around.

My mum used to be a huge meal replacement fan and spent the majority of my teenage years swapping her meals for milkshakes, but the flavours were nearly always limited to just the three, Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry with the odd occasion where the company would add a special like Banana to mix it up a bit. I remember thinking that they’d pushed the boundaries at one time offering Cafe Latte in a tin which I would often nick out the fridge to drink as a regular drink (may have contributed to the size I am now in fact) but that’s as modern as they got back then. These days with Exante, they’ve pushed the boat to a whole new Quay – Lemon Cheesecake, Hot Chocolate and Ginger and Irish Cream flavours just to name a few, grace the shop and delight the palette. Take the powder, empty it into the shaker with water and give your muscles a workout in the meantime. Job done. I don’t like my shakes too thick so I always add extra water which in some cases can be a disaster as the flavour doesn’t carry well in some but these shakes cope well. Flavour was still pretty strong even when I thinned it out a little.

exante diet

As well as the shakes they do a nice little range of snacks. I have to have something sweet on my diet or I’ll fail (as I so monumentally have demonstrated) so sweets, puddings and snacks are my go to just to survive. Choco Balls are allowed (although you can get them from the likes of MuscleFood too called Chocolate Protein Balls) are the dieters equivalent to Maltesers and they’re ok I suppose, although no substitute for the original. Bit less light and a bit crunchier than regular sweets, with much more protein. Protein rich diets are far superior to regular “diet” systems anyway as they promote feeling full as opposed to feeling light of pocket and still as chunky as a Yorkie bar so mixing in some protein elements are good in my book.

I usually eat Porridge for breakfast with added Flaxseed so I didn’t really want to deviate from it as it’s the one thing that keeps me totally full until lunchtime but they tempted me with a packet of Maple Syrup Pancakes dammit. You have to make sure that you spray enough oil into the pan though because if you have the pan too high they burn immediately. We made the mistake with one of the pancakes and manage to salvage the other one thankfully which tasted really nice and would make a nice alternative but as I only had one packet, I couldn’t find out if it kept me as full. Still, tasted nice with the addition of the calorie free sauce (which I have a cupboard full anyway being diabetic as it normally gets poured over soya ice cream, porridge, yogurts and anything else that needs a bit of a lift) again, I purchased mine elsewhere, but it’s a must if you want to lose weight, or just don’t want to add sugar to everything.

Exante breakfast and dessert

Puddings though are the best part of the meal and they’ve handled that quite nicely too – I’m not keen on the Tiramisu pudding though as it’s just like a gloopy cross between a milkshake and a mousse, and unfortunately although it smells divine it’s flavourless. However, the chocolate pudding is another matter. More like a salted chocolate cake, it’s a microwaveable miracle. Gooey in the centre, and not unlike the Japanese mug cakes that I made in abundance during my diet (albeit 50 calories less but still) it’s a dieter’s dream! I had a couple of packets put in the box for me and I’ve purposely kept one back to savour when I’m utterly desperate for something naughty so they must be doing something right. The same goes for their bars – especially the amazing Strawberry Jam and Yogurt Bar (I could eat this quite happily several times a day but for (if I remember correctly) 200 calories per bar it’s not for snacking as such but still very, very good for naughty moments.

exante bars

The only things I have issues with on this diet. I hate the fact that they promote VLCD’s (Very Low Calorie Diet’s). This isn’t healthy in the slightest. Your body goes into starvation mode with calories this low and you’ll end up losing weight very quickly (which incidentally isn’t fat, it’s generally water) and becoming sick. Body organs don’t thrive being put through diets with calories as low as 600-700 per day. Look what happens when overweight people have gastric bypasses and bands. They are left with saggy skin and if they’re unlucky the body turns on itself, caving in to other more fatal diseases. This is no good!!! Diets below 1600 calories are pointless and in my opinion damage not only your confidence as you can’t maintain a decent weight loss any lower as there’s nowhere to go to negotiate a loss, and will cause more damage to your body than you think. Short term, ok, but long term NO NO NO.

The other thing that I have an issue with is the price. Why do companies feel the need to charge so much for diets? ExanteDiet have at least given some fairly decent deals with their programme, offering a BOGOF on their milkshakes and 60 products for £60 which is a lot more financially friendly than others I’ve tried though.

Sadly I didn’t get to try the main meals as I don’t do reconstituted packet food. I think a meal cooked from scratch with fresh ingredients is the best thing you can have on a diet. But if you have no choice and you just have to buy the whole programme, then I doubt you’ll be disappointed if they take as much pride with the main meals as they do with the milkshakes and snacks.

Right now you can get it on offer if you pop over to the site, and if you need to shift a bit before Christmas and don’t have time, then it’s a decent enough option for you to take.

PMDD, Depression, Menopause or what?

Those who have been with us a while may know that I endure depression and anxiety now and then. Thankfully it’s not like it was back in 1997-2001 when it was each and every day, but now it’s more when I get myself stressed to the point I have panic attacks, have a sudden shock, forget to take my medication regularly or drink too much caffeine.

I get symptoms that tend to start with my knee aching.  That then leads on to having hot flushes as soon as we turn the light off at night to sleep, and then insomnia.

I’m now 43 years old, haven’t managed to have a baby as yet (we lost one back in 1997) and have tried ever since then with no luck and now I feel as if it’s too late.  I emailed our local adoption service at the council and received an email back, worded as if I were a criminal that “you’ve had dealings with Social Services and we need to know what this was in connection with before we even talk to you” or words to that effect.  That immediately took me by surprise because I personally have never had dealings with Social Services, however my mum has because of her dementia. So I emailed back explaining that I was my mothers carer etc and the other details and received an email back basically saying that if I have any illnesses and wasn’t “energetic” that my chances of adopting were nil.  Doesn’t matter that both myself and Andy have enough love to care, they were more concerned by the fact that if I couldn’t care for my mother how would I expect to care for a child with possible behavioural issues.  Erm… my mother is 5ft 6 and at the time took to swinging a 10lb concrete dog at me whenever she had the chance, not to mention calling the police if she didn’t get her way, and if I could cope with that for 3 years, I’m damn sure I could cope with a child who might actually have had, or have the same behavioural problems that I myself may have dealt with in the past.  I had behavioural issues all the way through my childhood which were probably caused through the head injury I sustained in nursery, but don’t mind me, move along.

Depression

But anyway I’m drifting. The whole episode of that made me feel horrible about myself to say the least. Plus the fact I’m already worrying about my sister (she is having issues with her heart at the moment) so that’s adding to my anxiety. It just feels like it’s never ending.

Worrying and being anxious always seems to make me either eat more sweet food or drink more coffee – neither of those are good for me at all.  Then the depression starts to creep in.  This usually occurs 2 weeks before my period too – this is where I’m beginning to think it’s more hormonal that makes me deal with things in a different way?

My periods have never been that regular, but the last few years they’ve been more regular than when I were younger when they were so incredibly erratic I ended up in A&E thinking I may be bleeding to death one month when about six months worth came at once.  So I definitely have hormonal issues.

OK, with me so far?  So I’ve been pondering. Is it PMDD (Premenstrual Dysmorphic Disorder) whose symptoms seem pretty much spot on, especially with the devastating depression just before the period which in all honesty stops me in my tracks where I’m scared to move for fear of crying, dying, passing out or whatever it is at the time.  Is it depression that I’ve been struggling with since 1997? Although I think this is more a severe depression which occurs once a month, and realistically I’ve coped with depression pretty much every day since 1997 although it has it’s moments.  Is it menopause? I’m 43 now, I get night sweats, my nipples discharge a clear liquid on or around my period and I do have occasional dryness down there sometimes. Or what? I’ve been “reading on the internet” again this morning and it seems PMDD could be the cause, however it doesn’t happen each and every month, it has for the last couple of months but before that it was now and then.  That could though be caused through losing weight when I felt amazing and nothing bothered me? All these thoughts go through my head, and so my brain never stops.  It’s never ending.  Until perhaps my period starts then I feel my whole body and mind just settle down. It’s literally like someone waves a magic wand over me, it really is!

While I’m writing this (in front of my light box for my SAD), grinding my teeth (I always seems to do that when I’m going through this bitch of a thing), I’m thinking about London Cheesecakes that Aldi/Lidl sell, and wondering when Andy will be back home (he’s taken Pea to the Puppy Parlour) AND also thinking about how I’ll feel tomorrow/tonight, trying to stop the bloody nerve twitching I get too when I deal with this.  See it’s a mind full of mush and it’s happening to me a little too often now that I’m in two minds whether or not to ask for some kind of hormone replacement (which I don’t think they’ll give me as I’m morbidly obese still).

Bottom end of the line is: I HATE DEPRESSION. I hate the way it makes me feel, I hate the way it stops me in my tracks when I’m enjoying my life, it just drops itself from a great height to poop all over me and I’m fed up with it. It has no place in my life anymore and it’s about time I dealt with it.  Diet day 3 now – I’m not giving up now as I want to beat it. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and all that.  We’ll see.

Nosh Detox - Jacqui"s View

I struggle with my weight and have lost 8 stone eating healthily and exercising but put the majority back on. I then took a break from it and stuffed my face, however this last month my depression has gotten to the point where I can’t physically cope with it so it was time to put a stop to overeating.

Along came Nosh Detox, and kindly offered myself and Kelly a week’s worth of their revolutionary Pegan Diet.

This particular programme Pegan diet is based on Nosh principles which we find works very well with digestive issues and weight loss across the board.  It is a cross between Vegan and Paleo which is substantially healthy and all meals have good balance of plant based protein not relying on animal protein only ( as this more sustainable way to eat for the body and the planet).

Great idea. So we both filled in their client form where you state your likes, dislikes, allergies, illnesses and they then do the rest of the work designing a plan for you to eat.

My first delivery was scheduled the day after Kelly’s as she’s within the M25 and I’m not, so I was quite excited when Kelly sent me over photos of what she received. I loved the sound of some of it and although some of it looked a bit like rabbit food (they send you snacks too and some are simply amazing) it didn’t look too bad at all. Some of what Kelly received was pretty much what I ate on my diet originally to lose the weight. Delivery to Kelly was quite late at night but at least she received it, fully chilled and packed beautifully.

Nosh

I received my package the next afternoon. Kelly had already started on her first day and said that it wasn’t too bad. When I opened my box, again chilled and beautifully packaged, I had a different mixture to Kelly. When they say eat the rainbow this was just what they meant – Breakfast the next day for me was going to be a chick pea one with a sauce so green, you needed sunglasses to eat it. It tasted divine. I adored it.

Nosh Meals

Lunch was a different matter on Day One as it was a salad with raw beetroot. Now as much as I adore Beetroot, I am not a fan of eating it raw at all, it’s horrible. But I ate what I could and then moved on a few hours later to the afternoon snack (which again was gorgeous). Dinner was again very green but was a Chicken Casserole. This was scrummy so by the end of the day I was in love with Nosh Detox.

Day Two and Three were pretty much similar (one morning I had grated sweet potato, raw cashews in a hazelnut milk and it was the most amazing thing I’ve ever eaten) but Day Four and Five just let me down. Watery tomato soup, a quinoa salad with a very, very oily dressing that literally made me gag (sorry ND) but the dressing turned me off what looked like a brilliant salad full of colour. I prefer vinaigrette based dressings and rarely use oil in any dressings at all so this was a big shock to the system. I’m afraid to say once I used the dressing on the dish, I took one mouthful and had to throw it away.

I think the fault of these things lies within their client form. It would be nice if you were shown a sample menu and ask you to choose which types of food you like out of those menus, then compile the diet around that. I can’t fault the diet as such as it’s very nutritious and sustainable but for me the price pretty left a sour taste in my mouth. £317 for a week’s worth is a little excessive, especially as you are told it is tailored to you when both Kelly and I received near enough the very same menus just in a different order. I did enquire about why the price was so high and I was told by the always helpful Sarah, that

Price for the programme covers the cost of chefs tailoring your day meal plan specific to each client i.e any dislike / allergies, delivering to your address and having personal support throughout the programme. it is quite the logistical operation to get all varies details together and delivered to your door.

As much as I understand that you are paying for an individual program, I don’t know if it failed on our part for not giving enough information or their part for not asking enough questions. I think it’s a fine line between the two. Still, in my opinion £317 is still far too much to pay for just a week’s worth of food considering when I was on my diet last year eating very similar, our monthly bill would be around £250.

Did I feel better on it and lose weight?

Well, do you know, I felt ok. It was nice to try some other ideas and combinations and realise that you can create sweet dishes without the need for sugar and sometimes just vegetables alone are amazing, but by the end of it I feel quite sick. I actually couldn’t stomach finishing some of the dishes as it was just too liquified, and eventually every memory I had of each meal rolled into one. I wasn’t that keen either or eating it cold or just warmed through so I never actually felt like I was eating anything hearty. So very sad as I had high hopes for it. Portion size is fabulous simply because it’s near enough all vegetables and they’re low in calories, I hardly felt hungry at all. Did I lose weight. I did, I lost a few pounds but that might be because I just didn’t pick as I usually do and what I did snack on was a lot healthier than a couple of biscuits.

What it’s proved to me is that balanced diets work, but before you agree to try one that you order online, ask to see at least some of the things that you will be eating as on the site there are no menus with images of the actual food and I think that lets it down big time.

Would I do it again? No, although it’s a fabulous idea only eating food that is sustainable, it’s not a diet that I could live on day to day.

Brew Barrel Review

We’re getting all the niceties ready for Christmas and I’m sure you are, but if you’re stumped about what to get your Mr, then how about a Brew Barrel? If you’re guy has never tried to brew his own, or is put off at just how difficult it sounds, then fear not. Brew Barrel is super simple and takes just two weeks to provide you with enough beer/lager for him to ring in the New Year.

Andy loves making his own beer. He’s tried to make it traditionally with hops, malt and a huge container (including a floating thermometer) to the Cheesemaker bag so when I mentioned Brew Barrel his ears pricked up and he wandered over in my direction to spy the website I had open. We were offered to trial a personally styled Brew Barrel, so went through the list of goodies they have listed. You choose the beer style, then the hops and finally the flavour. We chose, Lager: Mild: Honey: Cascade.

It arrived within a few days by courier (result) and we set about pulling the kit apart and arranging everything ready to start boiling water needed, syphoning off cold water from Virgin Pure (they say you can use tap water but bottled water might be better. Virgin Pure is filtered so thought we’d give that a go). Andy added all the water needed, added the hops and the flavour. We were then told to turn it upside down for 30 seconds and leave it to rest for a few days. After then we had to rest it in the fridge for 5 days. Only then could you remove the air from the barrel by pushing the little red valve on top, then proceeded to pour out a pint.

It was a little fiddly to pour the pint out as the handle at the front wouldn’t pull out correctly, and although we removed the air the pint still poured out with such a force Andy ended up with a pint of head initially. Once it settled down we had a lovely pint of almost clear lager. Now I don’t normally drink but I just had to try it as it was our first personalised concoction. It was gorgeous. The overwhelming taste was honey, followed by a flowers. It was so nice I drank the whole pint. It’s like a very light lager that you can drink at any time. There wasn’t any “iron” taste which usually hits the back of my throat when I’ve tried lager for reviews, this was very creamy and totally delicious. It was so incredibly easy to follow too I can see me buying Andy another one for Christmas as even I could do it. Not complicated at all.

It’s a lovely little size too and fits in the fridge quite easily and comfortably, we left it on the side in the kitchen at first, then Andy put it into his beer fridge and drains a pint out for lunch pretty much every day since.

€29.00 for the basic kit, and a few extra euros to buy extras to make your barrel truly unique. Worth it? I should say so, we loved making it and Andy loves drinking it. Top notch!

Oh Baby London Great Sale now on

pstux1_1

Xmas is nearly upon us and a lot of parents and other family members always get kids new clothes to wear for xmas day or for presents. Normally I find it hard to find anything really decent and cheap but this year ohbabylondon has come in handy as at the moment they have a massive sale on. No small discounts either, you can find items massively reduced. Some items which originally were £32 are now £5, and £48 down to £10 – I think you get my drift. The clothes are extremely well made as well and sizing is good most of the clothes go up to age 8-9yrs and if you don’t like buying on line you can also go to the store in Brick Lane, London as they have a great choice in the store as well.

If you are looking for the perfect xmas outfit this year then make sure you visit them. I promise you won’t be disappointed and your kids will love the clothes as they are so stylish and different they will be the envy of their friends.

Get those lovely treats for the little people in your life. Lots of bargains to be had.

I"m finally Back

Eeek I’ve realised it’s been a while since I did a blog post but I’ve been so busy with things lately I’ve barely had time to sit down. I’ve decided I’m going to start making some time for myself even if it is just an hour a day to start with. For the past couple of months I have been a bit depressed as had a lot going on healthwise with depression and my weight problems BUT I have decided to do something about it.

Answers

I’ve been trying to sort stuff out with Lauren with her health problems and school things. She is in a PRU (pupil referral unit) but she is in it for behavioural problems. She has been there since January and let’s say since being there even though it is the wrong place for her we have finally got answers, some which we have been fighting to get acknowledge for a long time too. They have found out that Lauren has a severe learning disability, she has with a mental age of 4-5yrs (she’s 9). She still can’t read or write but I’m sure one day she shall get there and achieve the same academic levels of her peers. At the moment we are in the process of trying to get her statemented again and her school she is in now is 90% certain she will get it and finally get admitted to the correct school for her that will help her and she will stay there till she leaves school at 18.

So as you can see we have been going through quite a bit with Lauren. It’s been a constant stream of form filling, meetings and other things so I haven’t had time to write any blog posts but I’m sure you all don’t mind as Jacqui does such a good job on posts she keeps you all going.

Right, as I said I will be doing a blog post about my weight and what I have done about it so I shall have a post up tomorrow for you all to read Hopefully it gives some of you some inspiration if you need to lose weight.

Take care

Christmas 2015 with Hotel Chocolat

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without chocolates and as usual Hotel Chocolat have come up trumps with the amount of Christmas themed choccie goodies for us to buy our loved ones.

I chose a few little gifts this year rather than a larger box so there will be something for everyone saving the regular “I don’t like truffles, and I don’t like cremes” conversation that you will no doubt have sometime Christmas Day when Auntie April passes round the box for everyone to choose from.

Hotel Chocolat have quite an extensive Christmas Collection so let’s take a look at a couple in more depth to whet your appetite:

The Elf’s Stocking:

Elf Stocking

A super cute little stocking filled with white vanilla bells, caramel trees and milk chocolate santas. Priced at just £10 it’s perfect for little ones in your family or for secret santas where you have a maximum of £10 to spend. Stocking is made of cotton and includes a little hook for you to hang up over your fireplace for when Santa pops in.

The Christmas Chorus:

Chocolate Chorus

A glorious gift bag with 4 taster selections. Coconut Snowballs, a Christmas Duo of Nutmeg Praline and Christmas Mess; Milk Dizzy Praline and Santa’s Slab. The coconut snowballs are my absolute favourite being a small truffle filled with creamy coconut liqueur. Much like a cross between a bounty bar and a spoonful of condensed milk. Just £12, it’s a lovely little selection and perfect for one (if you don’t want to share).

The Mint Box:

Hotel Chocolat Mint Box

Mints are my thing. Never a week goes by without me asking Andy for a box of After Eights or other chocolate covered mints, and so this I thought might be the answer to my prayers. £10 a box and described as being a “journey through mint”, sadly I think I missed the bus. They were not a peppermint flavour but were more akin to a wild mint that you pick for a Sunday roast. I think it’s the only time that I’ve felt a little disappointed and sadly this box let me down. The chocolates themselves look stunning, as does the majority of the Hotel Chocolat selection but the flavour was such a let down in this box. Saying that though, if you do like a very lightly flavoured wild mint flavour, then these will be perfect.

If you’re looking for some chocs to splash out on rather than buying the regular stock that you see piled 10 high in local supermarkets then Hotel Chocolat is the place to go online.

It"s Cocktail Time with MicroBarBox

Cocktails!! One of my favourite things (I don’t drink a lot of alcohol but do adore a little tipple now and then). Cocktails are fabulous when you don’t want a regular drink and are feeling a little daring. We have another subscription box to share with you that makes that job a little easier. It’s also unique enough to make someone feel very special at Christmas when they open up the first of their gift box subscription.

PackShot

Microbarbox supply both one off boxes and subscriptions with their Monthly Tasting Box to allow you to explore your exotic side. The box which we received had already tempted my tastebuds with the taster shown online so when it turned up I couldn’t wait to break into it. Sadly it was only Saturday morning so I couldn’t blag it enough to get Andy to make the cocktails at 10am in the morning. However come 6pm in the evening we were more than ready to grab the bottles and nibbles for a fun night. We lined up all the bottles, grabbed the card that explained what we were to expect and got mixing.

Microbarbox

Our box contained:

Funkin Mixer Mojito x 120g

Bacardi White Rum x 50 ml

Cawston Press Cloudy Apple Sparkling Apple Soft Juice Drink x 330 ml

Coole Swan Irish Cream Liqueur x 50 ml

Feigling Apple Pie Liqueur x 20 ml

La Perle by Paul Sapin Merlot Pay d’Oc x 187 ml

Raisthorpe Wild Vodka Toffee/Caramel Liqueur x 5 cl

Cambrook Sesame Peanuts x 45g

and Schwermer Zombie Liqueur Chocolates x 50g

Unlike the previous cocktail box I tried, this had a couple of drinks that I had not partaken before, so I was quite excited to find out what a “Toffee Apple” or a “Toffeetini” was and to be honest, they were both simply stunning. I’ve never tried Coole Swan Irish Cream Liqueur however it’s a much lighter version of Baileys which tends to hit me like a brick with the alcohol volume. But mixing that with Raisthorpe Wild Vodka resulted in a Toffeetini (and which Andy didn’t get to try as I drank the lot). This one will be my drink of choice for Christmas too, so will be purchasing a larger bottle of those two for sure.

MicroBarBox

Snacks were also pretty tasty with the peanuts (which are very, very similar to a Japanese snack of Karinto Crackers) and liqueur chocolate bar (this was pretty strong, and not a good idea to nibble at 10am when you get the box).

snacks

Each box is £24 + £3.50 p&p with themed boxes ranging from £29-£35. If you’re interested we have an exclusive code for readers of Us Two Friends to get you a huge £12 off your first Monthly Tasting Club Box just by adding “USTWO” in the discount code box and wait to be spoilt for choice.

However, if you don’t want to take up the deal just yet, I won’t spoil it for anyone else and go into what the rest of the box makes as we have a fabulous giveaway for you to receive your own MicroBarBox on our competitions page (ends 30th November 2015) and you can then find out for yourself.

Uzuma Juices

When it comes to a few weeks before Christmas, TV and magazines are usually flooded with “Party Diets” and great big grand schemes on how to lose that vital stone in time for Tinsel and Turkey but do any of these diets ever work? Are they healthy? How expensive are they?

In the last month I’ve had the pleasure of trialling Uzuma. Uzuma is a system of cold pressed juices and the initial reviews I read were quite promising so I was quite intrigued to try it for myself.

One of the major advantages of Uzuma juice is that they are preserved through HPP (High Pressure Processing). Many juices are pasteurised as manufacturing it this way the pasteurisation stops deterioration of flavour and nutrients, so on paper it sounds like a first class alternative diet.

Uzuma Juice Plans

When they arrived they were still frozen so I had to take a portion of them out for the very next day to defrost ready. First thing I noticed was the colours of the juice – they looked pretty amazing, but whether or not if would taste as good as it looked I wouldn’t know until the next day. The individual bottles are named, so depending on what program you are following: Slim, Steady, Fit or Detox, you will have a mixture of bottles to arrange for your daily allowance. You can download the app to follow the plan, which rings an alarm every 2 hours so you don’t forget to drink it. Over the 3 days I used the juice, this got a little annoying as it felt like all I did all day was drink to the clock, so perhaps just giving the user an idea of what to drink would be best rather than a timetable.

iphone app

Anyhow, the next day the juices I was to use that day were defrosted and still cold, so I started to use them. They were ok, some were nicer than others. The green juices were a little less enjoyable than the orange and red ones (mainly because the base of the green coloured ones were filled with kale, and I have a distinct dislike of kale at the best of times). The juices that contained carrot were beautifully sweet and the dark red contained beetroot which although was quite earthy were still quite palatable.

You have to drink one of these juices every 2 hours. I thought this was a little much when you’re also asked to drink vast quantities of water as well. The first day I constantly felt full but not fulfilled. To me, it was far too much liquid. Yes the drinks do have quite a bit of fibre in them but by the end of the day I struggled to find the enthusiasm to drink the very last drop.

Uzuma

That night I slept amazingly well. I haven’t had a night sleep like it for years. I slept all the way through so once I woke up I felt quite rested. Next morning I woke up after 10am so I had already missed 2 of my allocated juices, so drank them those and the one allocated for that hour in the same hour. Bad move. I got the most horrendous stomach ache, with numerous trips to the toilet shortly after. So there’s one hurdle to overcome. Move the alarm to a later time if possible. What I didn’t expect to happen though was over the next few hours to feel euphoria. I felt really well. Aches I had in my back had subsided (and that was just after 1 and a half days worth). So I had massive hopes for the next day when I finally made it to bed.

Shortly after going to bed, I became very, very cold. My bones ached, I was shivering all over and felt quite unwell but I managed to get to sleep somehow. Next morning though was a whole different kettle of fish. I sat lifeless on the sofa, not wanting to eat, drink or even watch TV. It felt as if I had the flu. I couldn’t move without my body aching, I felt sick, dizzy and thoroughly horrible. I couldn’t stomach any drinks at all that day, so just went to bed and slept.

UzumaJuice

Next morning I felt the same, and the very next day, and this went on for nearly 2 weeks. Somehow I think the juices were pulling all the toxins out of me after 2 days, but it was so bad that I never managed to make day 3. I have never felt so ill before and although weight loss by the end of the 2 weeks was immense it wasn’t through drinking the juices (unless it’s supposed to bring out illnesses to kick start your metabolism or not) but as much as I loved the taste of them, I don’t think I would do it again. I loved how I felt on the morning of day 2 but by the end of it I was a wreck.

Whether or not I had a reaction I don’t know but some of the feedback I’ve read does suggest that sometimes it can be a little delicate on some stomachs – looks like I might be one of those, however if you have tried juice diets before and have had some fabulous results (again, I’ve heard some amazing things about losing weight just drinking juice) then why not have a go. For 3 days worth of Uzuma it’s around £52 and for that you get 21 bottles of really fresh juice, frozen from store to door which you just have to defrost. Simple and easy with no worries about shopping or delivery fees.

Have you ever tried juice diets? What’s your opinion of them?

Our Top Hamper Choice for Christmas 2015

If you are on the hunt for the ultimate Christmas Hamper for friends and family then I have the perfect choice for you. This hamper when I opened the box and started diving in, blew me away. The quality of goodies was exceptional

Our friends at Spicers of Hythe blew me away a few months back by sharing one of their amazing hampers with me. It’s actually one of the very best hampers that I’ve been lucky enough to receive. It was crammed from lid to base! Let’s take a look at what we were treated to in this huge box of delights:

Spicers of Hythe Hamper

Auntie Frogs Lime and Chilli Dressing

Cocoa Bean Company – Very Berry Chocolates

Franks Shortbread Mini Bites

Lemon Biscuits

Radfords West Country Clotted Cream Fudge

Cocoa Ooze Dark Choc Cinder Toffee

Dormers Chocolate Raisins

Simpsons Hazelnut Dabs

Wooden Spoon Strawberry Extra Jam

Atkins and Potts Milk Chocolate Dipper

Hawkshead Relish Company – Apricot Chutney

Edinburgh Brazilian Coffee

Yorkshire Crisps

Money Bojangles – Rhubarb and Custard

Fosters Spicy Plum Tomato Chutney

Franks Raspberry and White Belgian Choc Butter Bites

The Original Cake Company – Dundee Slab

Ahmad Tea – English Afternoon Tea Bags

Mulled Wine Sachet

Walkers Shortbread Fingers

Farrah Olde English Toffee

Belvoir Cranberry and Raspberry Presse

Lomas Carrera Sauvignon Cabernet

Now can you imagine digging that lovely lot out of a box?

Christmas Hamper

It was such an eclectic mix of things. The Lemon Biscuits were light and crumbly and a perfect addition to a cup of afternoon tea or coffee. If you prefer your biscuits to be a little firmer, then grab the shortbread fingers, or the Shortbread Mini Bites (which come in the cutest little bag) and have a dip.

Andy grabbed the whole bag of the Hazelnut Dabs initially but I wrestled them off him just for the photo and a little nibble. Luscious dark chocolate pools hug a crunchy hazelnut which compliment each other beautifully. I think rather than just grabbing the bag for a chomp, I’d use them on top of a buttercream swirl placed delicately on top of a chocolate and cream sponge for added interest. You could even alternate that with a little square of the clotted cream fudge to add some diversity to it. So many ideas!

Cake Slab

If you’re looking for something spectacular then choosing a hamper from Spicers from Hythe is the way to go. I’ve never eaten everything from a hamper before now because some things have not been to my taste. Sometimes you get items in a hamper that just don’t go or that you’ll never ever use but I can honestly say, everything in this one has been demolished. The only things we have left from it is the Mulled Wine Sachet and the bottle of Sauvignon Cabernet because we don’t tend to drink wine but they will be used when Andy’s sister comes up to visit as more her thing than ours, but that’s the only 2 things out of this huge selection. I think the only thing missing from this hamper if I were being super, ultra picky was a small box of crackers. Now we don’t use them either as our dogs don’t like the bangs, so they would have been wasted on us, but being Christmas, I would have thought that could be an option. Again, that’s only me being ultra picky as this hamper and goodies was so incredibly perfect I could not find a single fault with it.

Some of the items which were finished quite quickly in this household have been repurchased (which I think is the whole point of hampers to give you a taster) like the Lime and Chilli Dressing. This was absolutely amazing and can be used in a huge amount of things from a drizzle on open sandwiches, to marinades for roast chicken.

But my absolute favourite out of the whole hamper has to be the Cocoa Ooze Dark Choc Cinder Toffee… I’ve always been totally nuts for cinder toffee (honeycomb) and would often buy a huge bag of it when I came to East Anglia on my holidays but this dark chocolate coated one is simply divine. Not only does it melt in your mouth but the chocolate isn’t too bitter even though it’s dark. It’s so moorish though I had to limit myself as eating too much of it at once would have thrown my diabetes out of kilter. But nothing wrong with a little of what you fancy!

Toffees

I was so impressed by Spicers of Hythe this year that I’ve changed my allegiance to the regular company that I use for hampers and will be buying them all from them instead. Delivery was super speedy too from notifying me I’d get a surprise to receiving it was about 24 hours too. What more would you want?

If you’re quick too, right now you can grab 15% early bird discount on Christmas Hampers (up until the 13th of November) with the code S15WB2 at the Spicers of Hythe checkout. Don’t even give it a second thought guys and girls, if you want quality and a superb service then look no further – and take the hassle out of present buying.

Keeping Your Furry Friends Calm on Bonfire Night

We’re not that far away now until people get together to celebrate Bonfire Night, and of course on the 11th there’s Diwali, so it’s going to be fireworks aplenty over that week. It’s then more than ever we have to make sure our furry boys and girls stay calm and relaxed, knowing that as long as they stay indoors and feel safe, they’ll be safe.

When our Biscuit was around he would get incredibly upset with the bangs and whistles that fireworks would shoot across the sky. He’d cry, dig for cover, shake and get in a terrible state until we did one thing. We made a travel crate into a little hideaway for him. We covered it with a heavy throw and put the door facing the wall, giving him enough room to push his way into (apparently the action of that gives them the feeling of security) and allowed him to make his way there when he felt scared. This calmed him down tremendously and so when the fireworks ended, we’d inevitably find him cuddled up under a duvet, fast asleep in there. Unfortunately we only found that out a few years after he’d had a terrible time over one bonfire night, and gotten himself into such a state he was sick. Thankfully nothing ever that drastic happened to him again once we sorted out the crate trick for him.

That was our experience and how we helped him overcome it and thankfully Daddy Bo and the Furries aren’t that bothered with fireworks so we just keep them in and shut the curtains. However should your fur babies still be a little scared, here are 9 more tips from our friends over at Petplan that you might like to try out.

Let me know how you keep yours calm too, is there anything you have to do to comfort them through it?

Diablo Sugar Free Goodies

It’s a myth that diabetics have to cut out all sugar in their diet. If I eat something with sugar in, unless it has a huge amount of carbohydrate in it, it doesn’t make my blood sugar rise, however as sugar just gives the body a large amount of energy in a very short amount of time and gives me what results in an emotional crash it’s common sense for me anyway, to limit the amount of sugar I have in my diet.

I find more difficulty in keeping my depression and anxiety on an even keel with what I eat compared to my diabetes, so generally I try to limit the amount of carbohydrates and sugar, doubling the amount of protein I eat to make me feel healthier. However sometimes I do want a treat but I want that treat to be healthy to an extent.

Recently I’ve been turning to Diablo Sugar Free goodies to help my cravings during my depression as it doesn’t give me a sugar rush. There is an amazing range of sugar free goodies that they manufacture so you won’t find yourself having a rollercoaster of energy rises and falls after treating yourself to a little naughtiness.

diablo sugar free

Chocolate Spread is a bit of a downfall for me as I will spread it on almost anything, but I had no idea that Diablo made a sugar free one! That made my day when I found out. It’s amazing stuff and near enough identical to Nutella so you don’t feel that you’re missing out at all. It’s quite versatile too. I mix it with a bit of butter and icing sugar for cake toppings, put it in my porridge in the morning, spread it on spikelets or melt it a little to put on the soya ice cream that I have in abundance in my freezer. Hey, I’ve even been known to eat it by the tablespoon for a chocolate kick it’s so good. You just have to remember not to eat too much of it because Maltitol is also known as quite a veracious bowel mover…

diablo sugarfree

The range includes some fabulous sugar free sweets (which I raved about on the Lifestyle Blog a while back), muesli bars and also No Added Sugar wafer bars. It’s these I’ve fallen for as wafers tend to be my go to biscuit in a box of family favourites so with it being chocolate coated it’s going to be a winner. 150 calories per 30g bar too so not a bad treat by any means.

Their peanut cookies have also been a winner in our house. I crush them up and use them as toppings on my low fat tiramisu, as bases on low fat cheesecakes or just to nibble with a lovely cup of earl grey green tea which I’m quite partial to at present.

You can buy their whole range from their website at Diablo Sugar Free as well as sites like Amazon, so they’re pretty easy to get hold of if you want to give them a go, so diet friendly naughties are indeed well within your reach.

Me and My Mental Health

Me and My Mental Health

Ever since my Dad passed away in 1997 I’ve had depression. They didn’t give me any counselling even though I asked for help and just threw antidepressants, namely Prozac at me to cope. I couldn’t cope. Prozac made me feel like a zombie so I just stumbled day after day feeling helpless. Even dating Andy in the early stages I was wracked with feelings of guilt for not being there for my Dad, I didn’t visit him, I couldn’t, I hated hospitals and that was because of two things. When I was 5 I slipped on sand in my nursery and cracked my head wide open as I fell as I hit a bench on the way down. I can remember being in a very dark room with a light overhead and my Mum standing at the door telling me to stay still as they (I assume) xrayed me. Then my Mum went into have a hysterectomy when I was 7 and back in the 70s you were in hospital for about a week. I missed her terribly and every time we left her there I cried. I felt so empty and my hate of hospitals came from there. All through my younger years I was in and out of doctors for one reason and another, mainly bronchitis which I seemed to have constantly, and that meant lots of time off school. This lead to be being bullied at school. Kids always seem to pick on the ones that are a little weaker (rules of the jungle I guess as all bullies are animals). I seem to remember a few times when I was a kid just losing the plot (perhaps the fall caused damage). One sports day I ran out of the playing field and across a busy main road, I’m lucky I wasn’t hit and I remember the helper screaming at me but it was an impulse thing, I have no recollection of thinking about doing it, my body just did it. It was like a head rush thing.
depressed

Not much else happened then until I was 14 years old (although thinking about it I do remember now and then running up to my bedroom, throwing myself on my bed and crying, saying that I was too young to die). I have a recollection of it being about the time of the Corona Bubble Advert as I had lots of stickers of the Corona Bubbles on my bed head or wardrobe at the time, so I was probably about 9 at the time. I just remember having this overwhelming emptiness in my heart and feelings of despair overwhelming me. Although I think it was probably caused through losing my budgie (I don’t cope with death of pets very well at all). This coincided with my Dad falling over and breaking his ankle, or there about. It may even have been over a 2 year period but seems to all have got bunched into one.

My depression when I was 14 lasted 3 months. From then on I was proud to have beaten it and would often talk about it with others knowing that I’d come out of it and felt stronger.

Then nothing at all much happened until 1997 when Dad died. I was my Dad’s carer from the age of 14 and again, back in the 80s there wasn’t any help for young carers. You were just left to get on with it. Mum would be out working, I would come home from school and look after him. Then my granddad died and ended up living with us, so Mum cared for him and I cared for Dad. I didn’t have much of a youth if I’m honest.

Fast forward to my miscarriage in 1997. That was one hell of a time too. Both me and Andy broke under the strain with that. Depression I had was horrendous, then losing a baby (long story but was caused through a smear with a nurse who at the time was having a nervous breakdown herself, and even though I pointed out the pregnancy test she gave me said positive, she drew across the lines and threw it in the bin telling me I was wrong). I regret to this day not fighting back but I was just too mentally weak from the depression. I then had a whole 3 years where I bled constantly. Since they took the nurses word that I wasn’t pregnant they left me to suffer for 3 years losing blood. Eventually my doctor listened and sent me to hospital to get sorted. Pills, pills and more pills later, it was sorted. I haven’t however been able to get pregnant since and now at 43 my chance has gone. I’m never going to be anyone’s Mum so I have to resign myself to that. It’s devastating. Makes you feel less of a woman. And right now I think I’m pre-menopausal too so that certainly doesn’t help my case.

Anyway, let’s get back on track. Year before last I decided to lose my weight. i did ok, I lost 8 stone and felt amazing. But my SAD started up again in the September and my body craved sugar. Long story short, I put it back on again. So I’m back to square one. The guilt of doing that is constant.

We then get to January last year. We lost my fur boy Biscuit. He was one of the reasons I lived. He was my world. I had never loved a dog as much as I adored him. I used to say to Andy that I felt like I’d given birth to him my feelings were that strong and the vets killed him with a pathetic diagnosis, and the fact that they left him to suffer for 48 hours doing nothing. Bastards. I’m in tears writing that bit. I will never forgive them for taking away my baby boy. I grieved, I’m still grieving for him now but the first few weeks were horrendous. I felt so numb. But one early morning I was having a dream about him. I called out to him and at that same time I woke up. He was standing there looking over me. The feelings of despair disappeared right then and there. He came to me in my hour of need like he had done 12 years previously.

So I’ve kind of struggled this last 8 months. My eating has been out of control. Latte’s and sweets every single day. It’s like I’m on a mission to destroy myself. Burying my head in the sand. But this is no good. It’s thrown my diabetes completely out of control again and when I get like that I get sloppy. I forget to take my medication (anti depressants and vitamins) and forgetting a few days worth of those throws me out. Being pre menopausal at the moment too, the hot sweats have been driving me nuts. Waking up drenched 2 weeks before every period, an aching knee, stiff neck, bad shoulder and worst of all, lumpy, sore boobs. Like all women should I regularly check my boobs for lumps but for some reason when I get this SAD depression I get paranoid and feeling my boobs last week I found lumps (although they are just the milk ducts which always swell with hormonal changes) but my head won’t listen. I also have a clear liquid coming out of my nipples when I squeeze them – again another sign of being premenopausal so I’m not worried. I only get it 2 weeks before my period and then during my period but nothing after until the 2 weeks thing starts all over again, so I’m not concerned, it’s natural. I even think my Mum went through the same. But it all disappears when my period is finished.

So I have all that going on in my head which I say nothing about. I don’t tell Andy any of it because I’m sick of thinking about it myself, so certainly don’t want to talk about it and bore myself even more.

Then last week I hear that a guy I went to school with had died. I found out a few years back that he fancied me back then. I was known as “the one that didn’t know” because I hadn’t got a clue but when I found out I was chuffed. I never thought anyone would have fancied me back then and it made me happy that even though I was like I was, someone still saw something in me. Back when he told me, he also told me he’d love us to get together but as I was with Andy, as much as I was flattered I declined. Still felt good though that he still had a thing for me. Boosted my confidence. However we stopped speaking and had just started speaking again a few weeks back. He then broke his hip and was in hospital. Last time I spoke to him he said he was miserable, bored and tired, I then replied but although he saw it he didn’t reply. But he always took ages so didn’t give it a second thought. Friday last week he was out of hospital but got a blood clot and died. I didn’t find out till Sunday. Now I didn’t speak much to him the thought that part of my youth had died shocked me to the core. He was 6 months younger than me too and had diabetes. I’ve had to unfriend his profiles now on social media, and not because I wanted to but because the outpouring of grief for him from all his friends makes me feel worse. He was loved by so many people, just reading their tributes was enough to make me feel numb. I just couldn’t do it any more. I have enough of my own worries to read how distressed others are.

Anyhow. It’s taken it’s toll on me this last week. I couldn’t stop thinking about him for a few days, I also haven’t been sleeping well due to the night sweats, shoulder pain has been at an all time high too, and I’ve had a bloody stye on my eye (so I know I’m run down). Oh what a palaver.

I’m sitting here with my Lightbox which after a cup of matcha green tea does make me feel a bit better. I usually sit in front of it for a few hours to feel the benefit, and have to remember to double my vitamin B6/B12 too just to kick it in the arse and leave me alone.

But that’s me at the moment. For the next week I’ll neck lots of green tea, eat lots of salmon and green leafy veg. I also have to remember not to grind my teeth (it’s a great tip that, if you find yourself doing it, relax your jaw as you can’t be stressed if your teeth are parted and jaw relaxed). With that and doing what the Linden Method promotes (keep your mind busy) I’m sure I’ll be ok. It might take a little while but I’ll be back to 100% soon. That’s life I guess.

Degustabox September 2015

Degustabox this month was as usual, pretty amazing. I love this little box of goodies because you never know from one month to the next what you’re going to get an 9/10 you get something brand new to the market that you get to trial. What’s better than that?

Degustabox

Let’s delve into this month’s box and let you know what you can expect if you were to sign up too!

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

Bassets Berry Mix Jelly Babies

Good Cider of San Sebastian

Up and Go Breakfast Drink

Mallow and Marsh Raspberry Marshmallows

Maynard Wine Gums

Portlebay Popcorn

TG Green Tea

Complete Energy Bites

Sweet Sally Tea

So let’s take an in-depth look into this wonderful box of goodies.

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, one of the most popular peanut butter confectionary delights in the US has in recent times been seen more and more on our UK supermarket shelves. Now I don’t mind the little cups, but these are huge! Way too much for me to eat on my own, so I had to share them with Andy who thinks they’re amazing.

I much preferred the Berry Mix from Bassetts as I’m probably the biggest jelly baby fan on the planet. This bag was purely the Berry Mix bag as we all know there’s never enough of those in the classic bags as they tend to be everyone’s favourite.

Maynard Wine Gums come in a favourites pack too – just the black and red ones (no opaque ones – boo hoo) again, one whole pack of people’s favourites so no more shuffling through the box just to find them.

Being a fan of marshmallow I’m surprised with myself that I’ve never actually tried the Mallow and Marsh range of them. I’ve often taken a look at their website and lusted after their Peppermint and Dark Chocolate ones but never got around to purchasing any. We were lucky enough to receive a mini taster box of the Raspberry flavour and to be honest, they’re lovely. A little different to regular marshmallows and not as chewy but I definite winner amongst us mallow fans. I’d go as far to say that I might even buy a box to share when friends come over at Christmas (if of course they last that long and Andy keeps them out of my way putting them on the high shelf in the kitchen).

September Degustabox

Now I’ve often eaten popcorn but never actually found these in our supermarket to purchase and that’s Portlebay Popcorn. Often seen it advertised and have entered their competitions numerous times to win some of their goodies but all to no avail so finding not one but two bags of it in this month’s box made my day. Hand popped in glorious Devon we had the delectable Original Sweet and Salty to try plus the brand new and utterly sensational Cappuccino flavour. I couldn’t get enough of the new flavour, and just so Andy to try some himself, he had to grab them out of my hand because there was no way I was giving them away without a struggle. This has got to be my favourite out of the whole box this month and will actively search now to try and find some to stash away for my “me time moments.”

It was drinks a plenty too this time what with TG Green Tea, Sweet Sally Tea and The Good Cider of San Sebastian so we had a lot to choose from after we opened the box. I grabbed a bottle of Green Tea which came in two out of the three flavours available. The Mandarin and Ginseng was a very light sweet orange which ice cold was beautiful. There wasn’t a huge taste of green tea in the drink but all the benefits. Probably good for those who don’t particular care for the regular green tea flavour but want something light and healthy. If you like tea but not green tea then Sweet Sally Tea might be better for you. This is a spiced tea made with Ceylon black tea, Spanish oranges, Sicilian lemons, a touch of organic sugar and a blend of cinnamon and cloves. Andy thought it was really nice but I found it a little too bitter for me. It wasn’t unlike Lemon Tea with a few spices which he’s quite a fan of anyway, so is more him than me.

The Cider didn’t get consumed until the weekend when we decided to have a roast dinner (which we haven’t had in a long time). I have to be careful though as sulfites in alcoholic drinks gives me stomach cramp which can last for days, so it was just a little sip for me and so I chose the pear. It wasn’t so much a sharp pear flavour but a very sweet conference pear flavour which threw me back a good few years to when we started growing our own pears and extracting our own pear juice from them. I think this is a perfect pear cider that actually taste of pear rather than being overwhelmed with the taste of alcohol.

No cereal in this month’s box, but 2 imports from Down Under designed for you if you’re on the go. Up&Go is like a milky porridge drink. We had chocolate and vanilla flavours to try and I thought they were great. The chocolate was much more my thing. Chocolatey, thick and just like eating my favourite 1970s breakfast in a bottle. Vanilla was ok but was much more like a regular milky porridge and as much as I liked it, I prefer having something substantial for breakfast that I can eat and takes longer to digest than a drink. Fantastic for you if you are indeed on the go every morning and just don’t have time to sit down and eat.

Finally if you need an instant boost to improve your alternates, endurance and physical energy then you’ll love Complete Energy Bites. These are little chocolate covered pocket rockets infused with caffeine which equals 1 large premium coffee. They are only little bites so whatever you do, don’t eat more than one even though they are incredibly moorish. One is totally enough and they are very high in caffeine and any more than that, you’ll be bouncing off the walls or up all night hoovering.

You too can try Degustabox with a £6 discount if you add the code BLDEG15 when you order. Can’t say fairer than that.

My Surprise Package from Serenata Flowers

Big boxes of surprises – we all love them but if you’re like me, anything that includes chocolate and cuddly toys is a winner. Serenata Flowers can pamper you if they’re your thing with their gorgeous selection of every day hampers to make those your thinking of smile from ear to ear.

Serenata Flowers

I was recently a recipient of the I Love You Hamper which came as a surprise, just when I needed a bit of cheering up. Beautifully packed with chocolates, sweets a cute balloon and even cuter teddy, delving into it’s goodies made my day.

It’s such a well received hamper, it’s sold out on the site, but there are many, many more to choose from if you’re in the mood to spoil someone.

Serenata Flowers Hamper

Mine consisted of a luxurious box of Belgian chocolates in a delightful heart shaped box, And they’re beautiful chocolates too. Creamy, mouthwatering and with a variety of centres. Boheme, the smooth raspberry creme is fruity and vibrant, to the salty caramel and vanilla buttercream Anastasia the small selection has tiny masterpieces beneath its plain exterior. A very cute, soft teddy bear, small I Love You balloon and a few other bags/boxes of confectionery.

Serenata Flowers Hampers

But the piece de resistance of the hamper? For me it has to be the white chocolate coated fruit pieces. Like a raspberry sherbet explosion once you bite through to the inner secret, your taste buds tingle with the tartness, hidden and hugged by thick, creamy white chocolate.

Perhaps the Time For Tea Trug with it’s pretty pink basket packed with tasty biscuits, English Tea and jam sparks your interest, or one of the amazing bouquets that adorn their site is more your thing? None or those? No problem, there’s so much more to choose from with more chocolates, wine or plants – their spectacular range is endless with prices to suit each and every budget. Serenata Flowers are a winner.
